Clear Water Bass Fishing Tricks! How To Catch Bass In Crystal Clear Water!

Clear water fishing scares a lot of people! Unless you’ve had a lot of rain, a lot of our fisheries get clear this time of year. When that visibility increases a lot of anglers lose confidence in their ability to catch bass. Maybe the fish see the line, maybe they see you, what can you do to keep catching them? Its not as tough as you think, and the answers may be VERY DIFFERENT than what you’re expecting!

“Clear Water” doesn’t always mean 10 or 20 feet of visibility, this can even happen when your fishery is usually muddy and suddenly has 2 or 3 feet of visibility. Step one is to stay very quiet. Don’t make excess noise, avoid vibrations, and you’ll get more bites. Step two, target the visibility line (AKA “color line”). Step three is to use lighter line for finesse techniques. If you’re not going lighter, go faster, that keeps the fish from having time to inspect your offering. Step four, shade and wind are your friend. Focus on dark edges that fish can use to ambush food, or days when waves are breaking up the overall visibility.

Below you’ll find links to our favorite baits for clear water situations. Yes, finesse is key, but don’t be afraid to mix in reaction and target those bigger fish in clear water. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. We’ve also included a couple of our favorite finesse fishing rod and reel combos in case you want to expand into this style of fishing.

Early spring Pre-Spawn Wisconsin Crappie Fishing (Surprise Catch)

Fishing for crappie in the spring is almost every angler’s favorite thing to do. Crappie transition from their deep winter basins to shallow spawning flats throughout the months of April and May in Wisconsin and Minnesota. This transition is determined strictly by water temperature. In this video, water temperature was in the low 40 degrees and the crappie were still suspended in deepest part of this river system.

Catching FAT Pre-Spawn Crappie 10+LBS! | Crappie Fishing Lake of the Ozarks

In this video, Kyler Beckmann and Davis Lenzen (Flopping Crappie) use a crappie fishing technique called spider rigging to catch pre-spawn crappie. They fished between 9-13 ft of water using 1/4oz jigs tipped with milk and chartreuse colored plastic lures. Spider rigging is a great way to cover large amounts of water, especially when fishing for scattered pre-spawn crappie.

What do Crappie eat in Cold, Dirty Water (COLOR CHALLENGE) | Crappie Fishing Lake of the Ozarks

This video explains what type of plastic lure crappie will eat, also how and where to find crappie during the early spring (pre-spawn) phase of the season. Kyler Beckmann and Davis Lenzen (Flopping Crappie) spider rig for early spring crappie on Lake of Ozarks. After a few hours they determined that Chartreuse and Milk color patterns were working the best of all the baits used that day, so they decided to put the best baits to the test in a head-to-head color challenge. They use 1/4oz. jig heads tipped with 2 inch and 3 inch shad profile crappie plastics. They learned that both colors can catch fish, however bait profile is the more important. During this time of year, water temps are below 40 degrees. This causes shad (bait fish) to become lethargic, which makes an easy meal for a crappie. Mimicking the shad profile will help an angler catch more crappie throughout a day on the water.
