Winter Fishing Tips: Ultra Finesse Baits When Its COLD!!

Is Winter wearing you down? Are you catching nothing but a cold when you go to the lake? A lot of anglers share your struggle and a few even give up and wait for “fishing season” to come back around in Spring. Don’t be those guys! Winter bass fishing can be incredibly rewarding if you know where the fish are and which baits they’re willing to bite in the cold water.

Non-fisherman think we’re crazy when they find out we’re headed to the lake in Winter! They talk about how cold its going to be, how boring, how miserable… but they don’t understand. They have no idea how peaceful it is to be on a giant lake, all alone. There are no wakeboard boats, no jet skis, and if you know where to look, there are a ton of fish to be caught!

Matt recently did a video about using swimbaits to catch BIG fish this time of year. Today we’re talking about how to get consistent bites. We’re not worried about the biggest bass, we’re focused on getting out on the water and having fun catching fish! We have a handful of baits that produce consistently when the weather and the water turn cold.

Below are links to the exact baits discussed in the video. We’ve included our favorite colors, trailers, and heads where applicable. We’ve also included some of our favorite rods and reels for throwing these different presentations. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Winter Bass Fishing: Finesse Tips To Keep Catching Fish!

Winter is coming fast! If your fish disappear as the water gets cold, there is hope! Over the years we’ve found a handful of key baits that get bit day after day, year after year, even when conditions are tough. If the Winter blues are setting in, turn to these proven choices to keep catching fish.

Many anglers quit fishing in the Winter. They turn to the woods or the couch to pass the days until Spring returns. Don’t be that guy! The lakes are incredibly peaceful in Winter and there are BIG bass to be caught! Some days you can still catch them on reaction baits but when the going gets tough, turning to finesse is a sure way to keep getting bit. Tim has a handful of baits including worms, jigs, and flies, that work everywhere he goes.

Below you’ll find a breakdown of all the baits he discussed in the video. We’ve included the rigging, the exact colors he relies on to keep getting bit, and some of the rods and reels he uses to stay successful. Fall Frog Fishing: Small Frogs Get More Bites

Frog fishing is a fun way to catch bass before Winter. As the water cools, bass ambush small minnows in the shallows around the last remnants of grass. The Frog is a great baitfish imitator and one of the last topwater bites of the year. If you don’t have snow on the ground, give the frog one last shot to wrap up the topwater season before Winter sets in.

This time of year, smaller frogs can be the difference between a tough bite and a day to remember. Smaller frogs perfectly mimic the small baitfish in the shallows. They elicit strikes when few baits will and typically have an excellent hookup ratio. Focus on ghost and glitter colors in cleaner water and bolder colors in murky water.

Of course, you’ll have to adapt your equipment to throw these smaller offerings. You’ll still need a stout rod to set the double frog hook but it doesn’t need to be nearly as strong as the rod you’d use for their larger cousins. Below you’ll find links to the gear Tim was using today along with a list of our favorite small frogs for different situations. We’ve also included our favorite frog combo, small frog rod, and budget option. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Bank Fishing: How To Catch The Biggest Bass Of Your Life!

Fishing from shore is a huge advantage when targeting trophy bass! Many anglers don’t realize how big of a factor “stealth” is when searching for the true giants. Sure, you can’t cover as much water, but the element of surprise far outweighs that minor problem. Today Tim teaches which spots to spend your time on whether you’re on a big lake or a tiny pond.

Shore-based angling gives the angler a variety of advantages. You get different cast angles than boats, access to inside grass lines, backsides of lay downs, and most of all, stealth. There is no engine sound, no sonar ping, nothing to tell the bass their next meal might not be real. The only tricky part is that you have to be around big bass to catch big bass.

The bass will position differently depending on the baitfish they’re hunting. For example, trout/kokanee eaters will be found on long-tapering points, choke points, and funnels. Shad/Panfish eaters will use backwaters and shoreline anomalies. The final keys are time of day, and lure selection. Below you’ll find links to our favorite baits for targeting these fish, based on what they’re hunting and the size of the lake/pond they are in. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Sonar Basics: How To Identify Fish (Bass, Panfish, and Baitfish)

Ever wondered if you’re really seeing fish? Which lines and marks are bass? Can you tell the difference between crappie, bluegill, white bass, etc? Which marks are fish and which ones are just stumps or rocks? Come along on the water in real time as we idle through creek channels and flats and identify the different fish we come across with our electronics.

Modern electronics give anglers an incredible advantage over the fish. Even with the most basic units you can now quickly identify active fish, even on a lake you’re unfamiliar with. Of course nicer electronics offer increased sensitivity and functionality but none of that matters until you understand what you’re seeing on the screen. Tim has spent countless hours behind the wheel analyzing fish positioning on structure and today he’s giving you the quick basics you’ll need to go out on the water and confidently locate fish on your own.

Below you’ll find links to the Humminbird Solix 15 Tim was using in the video, along with a variety of other great units. We’ve included some of the best units from different brands but also some amazing “budget” options that will get you on the water, identifying fish with modern technology, without breaking the bank.

How To Catch Suspended Bass! (Fishing During The Fall Draw Down)

When water levels start dropping fishing gets tough! That is, unless you know where to look. As water levels fall, bass back away from the shore and suspend in open water. Targeting these suspended bass is one of the biggest mysteries in the sport of bass fishing. Today, we’re going to show you how we do it!

Most reservoirs have some form of Fall draw down. One reservoir will drop a few feet to reach Winter pool, another might drop 150 feet. Regardless of how far the water falls, the bass’ overall behavior is similar in both situations. Once bass begin to suspend most anglers will complain of a tough bite. They go from catching less fish, to catching no fish, to not even being able to see fish on the graph in a matter of days or weeks.

What do you do? You adapt! Today Tim is explaining where he looks for these bass and what he uses to catch them. His method is very simple, employing a handful of consistent lures to coax these open water fish into biting. Below are links to the exact baits (including exact sizes and colors) and some of the gear he uses to throw them. The links go directly to Tackle warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Blade Bait Tricks You Need To Try This Fall and Winter!

Most anglers have no idea how to fish a blade bait effectively. They might know that its traditionally considered a cold water lure but they have no idea it can be fished shallow around grass, worked aggressively, and even substituted for a lipless crankbait. Blades have so many uses in Fall and Winter, you really need to experience it for yourself.

Traditionally the blade bait is hopped slowly along the bottom in cold water. It gives a slight vibration on the hop then “dies” and flutters back to bottom. Its remarkably effective for trophy smallmouth in frigid water but for the average angler, its applications stop there. That original cold water use is still effective and should be a part of your Winter arsenal but today is about expanding how you fish the blade bait. We use 2 retrieves throughout the Fall to get consistent bites.

When the bottom is free of debris we fish the blade on the bottom. We use the exact same hopping motion as we use for the LV-500 to trigger a feed response. While that application is very traditional, you might be surprised to find out we often do it in 2-10 feet of water. The blade is not just a deep water bait, its incredibly effective in the shallows as well! The 2nd retrieve is a burning retrieve.

We cast and wind the blade much like a traditional lipless crankbait, ripping it free when it comes in contact with grass or other debris. When fish have been pressured by tournaments or negative weather conditions, the switch to the silent vibration of a blade bait is deadly. Blade bait season is just beginning, you need to get out and give it a try!

Below you’ll find links to our favorite blade baits along with the rods, reels, and gear we use to fish these baits effectively. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

5 Finesse Tactics For Fall Bass Fishing

When the Fall Transition gets tough, turning to finesse will save the day. It might even get that big kicker bass you’ve been looking for! Tim is an expert with finesse tactics and today he’s discussing the 5 rigs he turns to when the reaction bite shuts down. Do you have a favorite?

Tim’s 5 rigs include a dropshot, shaky head, ned rig, finesse swimbait, and finesse jig. He leans very strongly to the dropshot but each of these options has a key place in the arsenal. Pay attention to the details of his dropshot rigs including different hooks and baits to achieve different actions. While dropshot fishing isn’t glamorous its incredibly effective in the Fall and is capable of fooling the biggest bass in the school.

Lipless Crankbait Tricks To Catch Bigger Bass This Fall

Lipless crankbaits catch giant bass! They are incredible producers when fished around shallow grass and vegetation but are equally effective in deep water. You can keep your lipless fishing simple and you’ll catch a lot of fish this Fall, or you can jump down the rabbit hole with us into a whole different world of lipless fishing where we’ll teach you how to use different baits, styles, and modifications to catch more fish!

Many anglers think of a lipless as a bait to cast out and wind back. A simple “chuck and wind” is effective but there is so much more you can do with these baits. From hopping bottom in deep water, to ripping grass in the shallows, the possibilities are almost endless. Tim is a lipless fanatic with the fish catches to back what he’s teaching. If you want to take it to the next level, pay close attention to the details. From sink rates to color selection to hook tricks, Tim is giving away all the details in today’s video.

All of the baits described in the video are linked below. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. We’ve included our favorite colors, the equipment we use to throw them, and the hook and gear upgrades we use to land more of the fish we hook.

BIG Bass on Chickamauga! Fall Bass Fishing Has Begun!!

Tim is on a mission to catch a big bass! He’s on the water early, armed with topwater and a chatterbait. Come along for the fun! Watch as he adapts to changing conditions, fine tunes the pattern, and catches some really nice Chickamauga bass! Fall is prime time to catch quality fish as they feed up before Winter so make the time, head to the lake, and catch a big one of your own.

When Tim set out he was searching for an early morning topwater bite. He had a plan but he stayed open minded, paying attention to his surroundings. It didn’t take him long to realize there was no surface activity this morning. Taking the cue from nature he dropped down to the bottom with a chatterbait and got the bite he was looking for! When you’re on the water its important to pay close attention to your surroundings at all times. Every time you hit the water you’re surrounded by clues that will help you dial in the pattern. Keep your eyes open, don’t be afraid to adapt, and you’ll start catching fish more consistently.

Once Tim ran in to surface activity he switched back to topwater and was able to capitalize on some really nice bass with the popper. As the activity died off, the dropshot was clutch to finish out the day. Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment Tim used throughout the day. We’ve even included an all-around budget combo that you could use for the chatterbait and light flipping.
