Catching GIANT Striped Bass In a NEW Lake!

Come along as Matt and Tim chase big striper! They’re exploring new water in search of these big predatory fish and it doesn’t take long to find them! The guys start out with swimbaits and A-rigs but quickly realize the fish have gone deep. A quick switch to a spoon is all it takes to get the big ones biting!

The key tonight was finding lures that could be fished effectively in deep water. Tim put time into the A-Rig (A proven producer for big striped bass) but the combination of deep water (30-45 feet) and strong current was too much for the rig. A heavy spoon (1 3/4 oz) in bold colors proved to be the best option. Even in the current we were able to hop the spoons as we back drifted. We had a very short bite window before the river currents slowed but we connected with two beautiful Striper before it was over.

We’ve done quite a few videos on spoon for bass and striper in the past. Matt typically leans toward a jigging spoon while Tim prefers a flutter spoon. Both styles are a must-have in an angler’s arsenal and worth learning how to fish effectively. If you’ve missed our previous videos on the subject you can see them here…

Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment the guys were using this evening. We’ve even included a link to the NET they SHOULD HAVE brought with them to land these big fish with ease. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each.

Topwater, Flukes, and Underspins For Aggressive Fall Bass!

There are dozen of bass busting on the surface and we’ve got the right baits to catch them! Come along as Matt takes a finesse approach to Chickamuaga. He’s throwing a fluke, a topwater, and several bladed swimbaits, but everything has been downsized to match the size of baitfish in the shallows. By “matching the hatch” the bite gets so good he can almost call his shots. Let’s go fishing!

One of the biggest mistakes we see anglers make when they downsize their lures is they also downsize their drawing power. Choosing baits that will draw a finesse bite but still maintain drawing power is an art in itself. Today Matt focused in on 4 key baits to accomplish this and ultimately added fifth.

The fluke is by far the easiest of the bunch, it has natural drawing power at any size because of its aggressive darting action. The topwater was accomplished by choosing a bait with a cupped face that spit water and created a larger disturbance than other similarly sized baits. Upsizing the drawing power of tiny swimbaits is a task but its most easily accomplished by adding flash. Matt used one with a flashing underspin blade and another with a spinner on the nose. And finally, when he backed out to deep water, the tail spin was implemented to maintain a small size but increase drawing power.

The next time you’re met with tiny baitfish in the shallows remember that you can downsize your presentation without downsizing your catch rate. Focus on baits with significant drawing power and you’ll catch fish. Below are links to all the baits and equipment Matt used in the video. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Where Do Bass Go During The Fall Transition? (And How To Catch Them!)

Cooler nights are coming and if your fish haven’t vanished already, they’re going to! The Fall transition happens overnight and if you’re not prepared you’ll be left scratching your head. There are two distinct groups of fish during this transition, some that go shallow and others that go deep. Today we’re going to take a look at where these fish are headed and how you can get ahead of them.

The fish that move shallow are there to eat baitfish. Its critical that you cover water quickly because the fish are congregating in schools. Vast areas will be devoid of life while small pockets and cuts will be packed with dozens, even hundreds of bass that are ambushing bait. If you’re not covering water quickly you may never find the mega-school you’re searching for.

The fish that move deeper are focused on structure. Many of these fish are still going to be feeding on baitfish but they will use main lake structure for their hunting grounds. Focus on offshore rock piles, humps, channel bends, and main lake points. If baitfish are present you’ll target these fish with reaction baits, if baitfish are not present the jig is your best bet.

Wether you go shallow or deep, Fall is an amazing time to be on the water! Bass are congregated into schools and the bite can be incredible. Below are links to the different baits we use for both shallow and deep schooling fish. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Matt and Tim are BACK! Exploring a New Lake! (Chickamauga)

After 6 grueling trips across the country, Matt and Tim are finally back on the lake together! They’re exploring Chickamauga in the middle of a Summer rain storm. Come along as they find new water, adapt to changing conditions, and catch bass on topwater and reaction baits.

A lot of anglers are intimidated by rain. Some don’t want their equipment soaked, others aren’t sure what to throw when its raining. Today the guys explain why they’re throwing different baits and how the conditions are impacting their choices. Its a unique look into both angler’s mindsets as they are adapting to changing conditions on new water.

While both anglers stuck to reaction baits throughout the day, they both downsized their offerings to get consistent bites. Matt leaned toward topwater while Tim leaned toward swimbaits and tail spins. Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment the guys were using to catch their fish. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

We Made It To Chickamauga! Topwater Bite Is On Fire!

We’re finally on Chickamauga in Tennessee! We survived the cross country road trip and now its time to fish! We’re starting out in search of a midday topwater bite and will adapt from there. Do that patterns that work on one side of the country work on the other? Let’s find out if the Clearlake pattern holds up!

Matt is joined by his nephew Ethan and together they mix up a variety of topwater offerings including a blade waker, buzzbait, walking bait, popper, and frog. It doesn’t take long to find aggressive bass willing to eat them all! Later Matt switches to a Keitech while Ethan switches to a chatterbait, and again they find consistent action. This further confirms the old adage “A Bass Is A Bass” no matter where it lives.

So many anglers are convinced their fish are different, that they won’t eat a particular bait or won’t follow seasonal patterns like bass in other parts of the country. While a rare example might exist, the vast majority of fish from coast to coast behave very Similarly. Its incredibly rewarding to drive thousands of miles (literally) and find bass eating the exact baits you were throwing before hitting the road.

Below is a breakdown of the baits in the video. We’ve included direct links to Tackle Warehouse for each item where you can see detailed photos and descriptions. We’ve also included trailers, color, weights, etc… where applicable.

Summer Night Fishing: Everything You Need To Know To Catch Bass At Night!

Night fishing is worth it and you should give it! The dog days of Summer can be brutal but Summer nights are magical and packed with aggressive fish! Just like fishing in the day, there are some tricks to constantly catching big bass. In today’s video we cover everything from moon phase to overlooked lures that get big bites in the dark!

Traditional angling knowledge would have you out on the lake at night with a Colorado bladed spinnerbait and a 10″ black power worm. While this works extremely well on a lot of fisheries, its just the tip of the iceberg on what an angler can do at night. Creature baits, reaction baits, topwater, swimbaits, even finesse baits, are all excellent choices at night. There is a time and place for everything and that’s what we want you to gain from today’s video.

You can’t forget the basics because they continue to work, but if you want to branch out and be successful there are some great options that you’ve been overlooking. Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment discussed in the video. The links go direct to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos, descriptions, and available colors for each item. We’ve also included some rod recommendations as well for some of our favorite night fishing combos when sensitivity is key.

Topwater Fishing Clearlake Before The Big Move! (Special Guest!)

Matt is headed to Tennessee but not before one last slugfest on Clearlake! Today he hops on the boat with Ross England to stick some fish before the big move! Come along as the guys chase a topwater frog bite in the morning then follow it up with jigs, creatures, and underspins!

Its going to be a few months before Matt and Tim return to California so Matt couldn’t miss the chance to catch a few more fish with Ross before leaving town. The bite was strong despite a ton of tournament boats on the water, and the guys wasted no time putting together a solid Summer pattern. The key this morning was fishing outside corners of cover with a frog. The fish weren’t in the pockets, they were right out on the points hunting small baitfish as they passed by.

Once the sun got overhead the bite shut down but Ross was quick to adapt to an underspin to fire the bite back up. Matt utilized a creature bait to cover water as the temperatures climbed and between them, the guys continued catching fish until midday.

Below you’ll find a breakdown of the baits and equipment used in today’s video. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. Additionally, we’ve included a link to Ross’ Guide Service if you’re interested in spending a day fishing Clearlake while Matt and Tim are out of the area.

Best Hooks For Bass Fishing: Senko, Worms, Crankbaits, Topwater, Swimbait!

So many hooks, so little time! Its taken us years (and hundreds of packs of hooks) to develop this short list of the best hooks for different situations. Whether you want to wacky rig a senko, punch a creature, or throw a deep diving crankbait, we’ve compiled this list for you! Not only do we cover hook styles, we also cover wire sizes, strength, etc… to perfectly match your fishing conditions.

Tim starts off with reaction baits and wraps it up with soft plastics. The reason for this is most anglers lose fish on treble hook baits. Crankbaits and topwater are the primary heartbreakers in bass fishing. You think you’ve got that fish hooked well but when the head shakes start, you lose. Almost all of these losses can be avoided if you truly understand treble hooks. When to switch between styles, when to switch to heavier gauge wire, etc.

Today’s video is a lot for you to digest as an angler. We know Tim breezed through a ton of hooks in a short time but its the only way to cover all the information. Below is a detailed breakdown of the hooks in order of appearance in the video. If you click the links (they go direct to Tackle Warehouse) you will see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. This truly is a challenging year with store shelves around the country completely empty and mixed information on future shipments. We hope this video gives you the information you need to be successful throughout the Summer and Fall.

Buzzbaits and Frogs! Summer Bass Fishing On Clearlake!

After months on the road we’re finally back on Clearlake! Come along as we explore the lake, build patterns, and catch fish! Matt utilizes a buzzbait, frog, and toad to catch a fish in the grass on a hot Summer day. Many anglers avoid fishing in the heat but if you know where to look there are big fish to be caught!

Catching fish consistently in Summer requires an understanding of how and why they position. Shallow water bass love to be close to cover. A consistent food source is also key. In most lakes, if you can find baitfish and grass in the same area, you’re around bass. This morning Matt hit the water at first light. He already knew where to find grass but the baitfish remained a mystery. By getting out early he was able to quickly locate active birds searching for a meal.

It took time to get the first bite but the bird activity confirmed the presence of baitfish and ultimately the presence of bass. Whenever you’re on the water pay close attention to nature, it’s clues can really shorten your search time. Once Matt located fish he used a combination of baits to get consistent bites from bass that were positioned to ambush prey as it passed by the grass beds.

Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment Matt used to catch his fish. We’ve included color recommendations for the various baits, the exact combos Matt was fishing with, and even a budget-minded alternative. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.
